Just over two years ago, Zenith Technologies launched its Active Heart Initiative, aimed at improving the heart health of its global workforce. The programme encourages staff to exercise and adopt healthier lifestyle choices, through activities including charity walks, sports days and mountain climbs. To further reinforce its commitment to health and fitness, the company has announced that it will be sponsoring the UK’s first female Masters CrossFit athlete, Cathy Wilson.
A sport that has made massive inroads in the UK over the past seven years, CrossFit is based on functional movements from a number of activities including gymnastics, weightlifting, running and rowing. It challenges even the fittest of athletes, but is designed with scalability in mind meaning that anyone can take part regardless of experience.
Cathy, 45, a working mum of four from Lancashire, will be heading off to Madison, Wisconsin in the USA to compete in the Masters category of the CrossFit games from August 3rd-6th, having successfully qualified as 14th in the world after seeing off competition from 10,000 competitors.
Commenting on her achievement Cathy said: “I am delighted to be able to represent the master’s community at the games, it just goes to show that you are never too old. Recreationally, it is one of the best sports to get involved with to keep fit and healthy as it is so varied and challenging, but in an inclusive way – anyone can give it a try. Aside from competing at a global level, it’s also a big part of our family life – we all take part and it brings us together.”
Cathy hopes to inspire younger generations and members of the Zenith team to maintain healthy and active lifestyles, and believes that by doing so, wider benefits can be achieved such as improved mental health and feelings of personal satisfaction and achievement. For Zenith, promoting participation in sports is all part of its commitment to helping employees to achieve a positive work-life balance, in turn supporting productivity in the workplace.
“Prioritising health awareness is important to Zenith as the wellbeing of our employees across the world is an important part of our success as a company. By sponsoring Cathy we hope that people are inspired to get active regardless of age or fitness level. We wish her the very best of luck in the CrossFit games.” said Brendan O’Regan, Executive Chairman at Zenith.
