Version 2.0
1 Synopsis
This three day course provides an understanding of the main function, navigation and controls of a DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS). It builds the confidence of the attendee to understand the benefit of DCS automation and the trainer will dispel any hesitation of the trainee about interacting with the system. The three day course has the following outline which can be tailored to include the client's particular graphics and database if requested.
2 Course Aim
The purpose of this training is to:
- Give you a good introduction to the DeltaV system.
- Give you an understanding the hardware and software elements of a distributed control system (DCS).
- Ensure that you gain the knowledge you need to run a DCS plant safely, efficiently and confidently.
3 Training Objectives
At the end of this course the Learner will be able to:
- Call up any process display on DeltaV DCS on demand, under normal process plant conditions
- Perform multiple controlling operations using DeltaV DCS on demand, under normal process plant conditions.
- Monitor historical data on DeltaV DCS under normal process plant conditions on demand.
- Respond to process alarms on DeltaV DCS under normal process plant conditions on demand.
4 Course Content
The course is made up of 6 training packs & an assessment as detailed below:
- Pack 1 - System Overview
- Pack 2 - Security & Navigation
- Pack 3 - ISA-88 Overview
- Pack 4 - Process Control
- Pack 5 - Alarms
- Pack 6 - Batch Control
- Assessment
There are 10 workshops as part of the training delivery. These workshops are an opportunity for the Trainees to have hands on time on a simulated system & to implement & query what they have learned. The trainees are required to engage in these workshops by carrying out the tasks on the simulated system & recording the results.
- Workshop (Pack 2)
- Analog Input Workshop
- Discrete Input Workshop
- Device control Workshop
- Control Valve Workshop
- Interlocks Workshop
- Equipment Module Workshop

- Alarm Summary List Workshop
- Adding, Starting, Holding and Aborting a Batch Workshop
5 Target Audience:
The target audience for this training material is Field Operators / Technicians in the Life Science sector with at least a years experience in operating process plant. The Learners should have the ability to interpret process flow diagrams, have knowledge of the basic instruments associated with process control loops & have Written & Oral English equivalent to ESS level 6.
6 Assumed Knowledge and Skills
The assumed skills and knowledge for this unit are as follows. Learners are
assumed to:
- have at least one year working experience as a field operator/technician in process plant

- be able to listen, speak, read and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills System (ESS) level 6
- be able to use numeracy skills at a proficiency level equivalent to ESS level 6
7 Duration of course:
23 hrs (Training: 21 hrs, Assessment: 2 hrs)
8 Training methodology
The training will be delivered in a class room environment. Theory will be delivered & reinforced with practical demonstration & hands on use of a DeltaV DCS simulator for each Trainee.
9 Assessment Activities
An assessment will be run at the end of the last day to ensure that the aims and objectives have been met and that the Trainees have gained the underpinning knowledge required to be certified competent. The assessment will be a combination of written questioning & practical performance.
10 Certification
Under the WSQ system, Trainees receive qualifications that are nationally recognised in Singapore.
These qualifications are as good as the credentials issued by international and local Singapore institutions.
Industries and employers validate the best international practices and standards that WSQ offers.
